Bali does one job extremely well: it absorbs almost everyone. That is genuinely useful, because it means the rest of Indonesia stays quiet. Fly two hours in almost any direction and the crowds simply stop.
Start with the easy escapes
Nusa Penida, Lombok and the Gilis are the obvious first steps, and they are still worth taking. But treat them as a corridor rather than a destination — every one of them connects onward to something emptier.
Then go east
Flores, Alor, Sumba and the Banda Sea are where Indonesia stops feeling like a holiday and starts feeling like a journey. Ferries here run to their own logic. Build slack into every plan.
Finally, go properly remote
The Togeans, Derawan, the Banda Islands and Raja Ampat all take days rather than hours. That cost is the entire point: what you buy with those days is water almost nobody else is in.
